War Monument « La Douleur » (Pain)

The monument ‘La Douleur’ was sculpted in 1922 by Aristide Maillol, a sculptor of North Catalan origin (1861 – 1944).

In 1919, the town of Céret approached the sculptor Aristide Maillol to ask him to create a monument in memory of the 151 people born of the parish of Céret who died during World War I.

Depicted is a Catalane woman, sculpted in simple yet solid lines as only Maillol knows how, her rounded form and downward-looking expression inviting us to share her contemplation.

A series of preparatory sketches for this sculpture can be viewed at the Musée d’Art Moderne.
